Call me a twelve year old boy, but occasionally I like to ponder the idea of having two fictional characters duke it out. Recently, I found myself fantasizing about a Bond vs. Bourne battle to the death. Who do you think would win?
Brief background & history
Created by Ian Fleming in his novels, James Bond made his debut on the big screen in the 1963 film Dr No. Since then, if you don’t include the couple of rouge Bond films, we have followed Bond (007) and his adventures through 24 official films.
Bond has a background in military training. As part of the 030 special forces unit, he earned “certifications for the operation of assault helicopters, Harrier-class jets, fixed wing aircraft, hovercrafts, marine assault vessels, armored vehicles, and other crafts.” “Bond excelled at SC3 and Underwater and Aquatic Warfare training. He constantly equaled or bested his superior officers and instructors in all areas after nominal experience.” (source James Bond wiki) He would eventually become an operative for MI6 and complete his training in only eight weeks.
Like Bond, Jason Bourne also originated in novels. Created by Robert Ludlum, Jason Bourne is the alias of David Webb. He has appeared in four films.
Bourne “ joined the United States Army and was eventually selected for Delta Force in 1998.” “After heavy training, in which he learned several languages and mastered several martial arts skills, Bourne was placed in the Treadstone program.” (source Wikipedia)
The outcome if these two ducked it out
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find a lot of information on what hand to hand fighting skills they specialize in. Based on what I’ve seen and read, I think it’s safe to say that Bond is more diverse. If it can fly or drive, Bond knows how to push it to the limit. However, we aren’t talking a chase through the city, or a dog fight in an F-16. This is face to face. Bond could probably hold his own for a bit, but Bourne SHOULD win the fight. I say “should” because it won’t play out that way. I see a scenario where Bourne is about to deal the killing blow, but Bond capitalizes on something in the environment. Maybe Bond just happens to see a dangling electrical wire, and notices that Bourne is standing in a puddle of water. It would be something stupid like that. This would definitely cue a one liner. “Well, that was shocking.”
In this factional battle of Bond vs. Bourne, unless the fight takes place with absolutely nothing in the environment, Bourne nearly succeeds. He beats 007 to a pulp. However, within seconds of his life ending, Bond finds a dumb way to use something in his surroundings. The winner is Bond.
